A Long Weekend in Brisbane, Australia: Interactive Art, Beaches, Beer, and Koalas

Wondering what to do for a weekend in Brisbane, Australia? Explore the various neighborhoods but be sure to get outside the city to the beaches as well as the Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary!

On our way to New Zealand we stopped in Brisbane, Australia for four days to visit friends. We stayed at the centrally located Four Points Sheraton in the central business district using hotel points.

TIP: Without our hotel points we would have opted to use Airbnb or HotelTonight. Use this link to get a $20 credit towards your first Airbnb booking or enter the promo code MMELLI for $25 off your first booking on HotelTonight.

Brisbane is the capital of the Australian state of Queensland. It is the third most populous city in Australia.

Brisbane: Art, Beaches, Beer, and Koalas

Brisbane is comprised of a number of districts. Districts that we visited included: The CBD (city center), South Bank (public art and park, site of 1988 World Expo), Fortitude Valley (night life), West End (bohemian, quirky), and New Farm and Teneriffe (upscale). We also ventured outside the city for beach time on the Sunshine Coast.

There’s so much to do and see in the greater Brisbane area. We only skimmed the surface but enjoyed the mix of activities we experienced. They included:

  • Wandering the streets, City Botanical Gardens, and river walk in the city center
  • Meandering through the park setting and viewing the Brisbane sign and Wheel of Brisbane in South Bank
  • Taking in the Brisbane River scenery from the public water ferry
  • Enjoying a cocktail at Savile Row in Fortitude Valley
  • Sampling beers from Archive Beer Boutique and Bistro, Brisbane Brewery, Green Beacon Brewery, Newstead Brewery, Range Brewing, and Soapbox Beer Brewery
  • Interacting with kangaroos and koalas at Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary
  • Soaking up the sun on the beaches and eating fresh fish and chips on the Sunshine Coast

We lpook forward to another visit in the future!
