All The Way With LBJ

April 29 – May 1, 2016: After boondocking at Walmart, we were ready for some BBQ and beer. We enjoyed food at a well-known BBQ restaurant, The Salt Lick in Driftwood, and then savored sour beers on the beautiful outdoor grounds of Jester King Brewery outside of Austin. The next day we had brunch at Banger’s Sausage House before visiting the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum. The presidential library was great.

It had a large temporary exhibit dedicated to the Vietnam War (where I probably spent too much time) and lots of other exhibits focused on LBJ’s life and contributions. These include civil rights legislation, the creation of Medicare and Medicaid, the Highway Beautification Act, and more. Additionally, LBJ recorded many of his telephone conversations and the library shares these private conversations with visitors. It’s quite extraordinary to hear him speaking with his wife Lady Bird, past presidents, Martin Luther King Jr., and many others. I’d highly recommend a visit; we stayed until closing time.

After getting kicked out of the museum at closing time, we sampled local Texas flavor at Craft Pride before heading to San Antonio, Texas.

NOTE: We have previously visited Austin so we just made a quick stop on the 2016 Road Trip. Our focus this visit was primarily on local food and cuisine located outside the downtown area (last time we didn’t have a car and stayed within walk-able downtown Austin) and on visiting the presidential library. You can read more about our last visit to Austin here.
