California Coast: Big Sur to Cambria

November 2 – 3, 2014: After departing Pfieffer Big Sur State Park Campground we stopped at the general store (Big Sur Deli) in Big Sur for breakfast burritos. We took our burritos and had a breakfast with a view at some random spot on the side of Coastal Route 1. I recommend you do the same because it totally hit the spot!

We continued driving Coastal Route 1 stopping at various viewpoints. My favorite, by far, was Piedras Blancas rookery – an elephant seal lookout point near San Simeon on Point Reyes National Seashore. It’s not worth me trying to describe how huge and floppy and cute the seals are – check it out for yourself on YouTube here. We stayed here walking the boardwalk and watching the seals for quite some time.

The lookout isn’t far from Hearst Castle but tours were sold out for the day so we continued down Coastal Route 1 to Cambria. We had been following this National Geographic guide to Coastal Route 1 (Pacific Coast Highway) but we detoured east to Paso Robles from Cambria to have dinner at the Paso Taproom Restaurant at the Firestone-Walker Brewery. We stayed overnight in Paso Robles at a nice RV park and visited the actual Firestone-Walker Brewery the next morning.
