The Los Peñasquitos Canyon Trail in Los Peñasquitos Canyon Preserve in San Diego, California meanders 6.8 miles over fairly flat terrain. The highlights of the hike are five creek crossings and a waterfall. 

Location of Los Penasquitos Canyon Preserve

Los Peñasquitos Canyon Preserve is just north of Mira Mesa in San Diego, California. The preserve is approximately 7 miles long and encompasses over 4,000 acres of the Peñasquitos and Lopez canyons. This map pinpoints three parking areas that have access to the Los Peñasquitos Canyon Trail.

Los Peñasquitos Canyon Trail is a loop trail with 5 creek crossings. The full loop is 6.8 miles but the 5 creek crossings essentially construct shorter loops. So, you’re able to shorten the length of the hike considerably. Los Peñasquitos Canyon Trail is a great hike for the whole family and all skill levels.

TIP: The terrain is fragile and trails may be closed after rains. Call ahead to confirm.

While hiking the Los Peñasquitos Canyon Trail you’ll see a stream, a freshwater marsh with aquatic birds, a waterfall cascading over volcanic rock, and maybe even a coyote.

TIP: In addition to great hiking, Los Peñasquitos Canyon Preserve has a rich Native American history. There are two adobes on the land: one adobe is in ruins and the other adobe has been restored and is open for tours.
