Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore extends 42 miles

Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore extends 42 miles along the shores of Lake Superior in Upper Michigan. Designated in 1966, it was the country’s first National Lakeshore. We spent several days here and experienced it from both land and lake. The photos here are from a sunset cruise along the westernmost 13 or so miles of sandstone cliffs that give the park it’s name.

The Porcupine Mountains, aka The Porkies, are a group of small mountains along the shores of Lake Superior on the Michigan Upper Peninsula. We were a bit early to the show this year, but this is a good place for fall leaf peeping. It’s home to a large stand of old growth forest, and, like much of this area, sits on a boatload of copper that led to the US’s first big mineral rush in the mid 1800s. With hikes up to beautiful vistas, waterfalls big and small, and abandoned mining gear being reclaimed by the land, you can get a real sense of the rustic frontier life here.

With 66 remote water-accessible campsites over 14,

With 66 remote water-accessible campsites over 14,000 acres of water, the Turtle-Flambeau Scenic Waters Area in northern Wisconsin is a bit like a mini version of the Boundary Waters. We hadn’t had enough of our kayak camping adventures yet, so as we crossed over from Minnesota toward the Michigan Upper Peninsula, we stopped off for a few nights in this area of Wisconsin and enjoyed an overnight paddle and a couple nights at a great nearby campground. The leaves had just started to show color as the seasons turned and we enjoyed a few perfect days out on the water.

The Apostle Islands National Lakeshore is 21 islan

The Apostle Islands National Lakeshore is 21 islands and 12 miles of coastline on the shores of Lake Superior in northern Wisconsin. The best way to see the islands is probably by sea kayak and camping, but we didn’t do that, so I don’t have much to say about this place. The boat tour was ok and there is a nice shoreline hike that lets you see some of the coast and sea caves. There are some lighthouses. We picked up about 700 flies in our van here for some reason.

Along the northwest edge of Lake Superior north of Duluth is Minnesota’s North Shore area. With fantastic hikes, beautiful sprawling coast line, lighthouses, waterfalls, cute towns, and great food and drink, this is a perfect getaway destination in and of itself. As our last bit of Minnesota on this trip, I found myself reluctant to move on, and left with a newfound appreciation for this great state.

The Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness is over

The Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness is over a million acres in northern Minnesota on the Canadian border that is over 20% water and contains over 1100 lakes. Some of these lakes are directly connected by rivers and small waterways and others just a short walk (a “portage” when you’re carrying your boat) away. With over 2000 official campsites available, this makes it an ideal place to get away from it all and experience full-on nature and solitude. We only spent a few nights, but the memories will last forever and it’s a place we would definitely come back and explore more of.

We paddled out into the wilderness. As the lake opened and a breeze kicked up, we fought against a chop and our bulbous inflatable kayak became unwieldy (“it’s a bit of a tank”, I tell curious onlookers when they ask, awkwardly failing to find a more appropriate nautical metaphor). Muscles becoming sore, we powered through to a camp on a private little island and set up for the night. The sun set and the fire burned and the Milky Way rose above our heads and eventually the yawns came and we prepared for a usually restless night of tent sleep. I popped out on the shore for a final look at the sky, but it seemed improbably bright. I was looking north over a large lake with nothing but Canadian expanse beyond and the moon was just about new and wouldn’t rise for hours. There was only one source of that light that made sense. I stirred Sara, who had somehow already fallen asleep, and we stumbled back out on the rocks. The light was brighter and dancing on the horizon, ribbons flowing across the sky, now unmistakably the Aurora Borealis. It had been five long years since we first saw the northern lights in Iceland, and we spent a while on those rocks recharging our souls with one of Earth’s most awe inspiring natural phenomenon.
