Note that while it would probably have been a good idea at this juncture, I was not drinking a beer here – I was using an empty to drain brake fluid into!

When I was a kid, I had a music teacher who taught

When I was a kid, I had a music teacher who taught us three-part harmonies using a peculiar little tune about a seemingly fantastical beast in a far off land. KookaWHAT? 🤔 A GUM tree?? 🤨 King of a BUSH??? 🧐 Spending time in Australia has been the fulfillment of a dream sparked in that class, by a beloved teacher that used the power of music to expand our cultural horizons. I know now that the Laughing Kookaburra (sound up on last slide!) is a bird, one of the largest members of the kingfisher family and a real cutie. A gum tree is a eucalyptus, not for chewing unless you’re a koala 🐨. And the bush is a magical wonderland containing these things and so much more. 🌳🌲🦜🐦‍⬛🦘🍄

Just a 45 minute ferry ride off Tasmania’s east coast lies Maria Island. Like many spots throughout Tasmania, it spent time as a penitentiary and is an Australian Convict World Heritage site. But what makes this place truly incredible is the wildlife. The National Park serves as a refuge for many of Tasmania’s native flora and fauna, and a day spent on the island feels like stepping back to a time before humans. We stayed overnight here to get the full experience and it quickly became one of our favorite spots of the trip.

If you’ve seen our last two posts you may already think that Tasmania’s eastern coast is full of wild beauty, but if you thought it couldn’t get any better, behold the Tasman Peninsula. Three rugged capes punctuate this land and make up a popular (and expensive) hike that for some reason only visits two of them. We chose to visit all three capes, two on day hikes and the longest one as an overnight. With the tallest sea cliffs in the southern hemisphere, this place has to be seen to be believed.

Moving a bit south down Tasmania’s eastern coast from the Bay of Fires, you’ll soon find the Freycinet peninsula and its eponymous national park, one of Tasmania’s first and its most visited. Freycinet’s star feature is Wineglass Bay, a picturesque beach that is regularly counted among the best in Australia and the world. But the views certainly don’t stop there - getting away from the crowds and exploring the park’s nooks and crannies will reward the senses.

The eastern coast of Tasmania is stunning from top to bottom, and it starts in the northern part with the Bay of Fires. Named by an explorer who noted the fires of Aboriginals on the beaches, the name perhaps equally applies to the striking appearance of the ubiquitous orange lichen growing on the rocky granite coastline. Add in white sand and clear blue water and you’ve got one of the best beaches on the planet.

Tasmania’s Ben Lomond National Park is mostly a ski destination, but if you dare to drive up the precarious switchbacked road known as Jacob’s Ladder, you’ll find a beautiful open plateau with a nice circuit hike around the summit area. Pro tip: you’ll want to use a low gear to climb this pitted gravel road, as I had to show the occupants of the car in front of us when I hopped in their car to ease them out of the ditch they managed to get stuck in on a particularly rough corner. 😆🚫🏎️🏁

Tasmania’s Walls of Jerusalem National Park has no road access, so the only way to experience this beautiful place is to grab your hiking shoes and sleeping bag and get amongst it. We spent three days, including one very chilly night, exploring the “central walls” area and taking in the majestic solitude (except the other snoring campers).

The Aurora Australis makes an appearance as the moon rises over Tasmania’s Southwest National Park on a starry night. Although this aurora wasn’t really visible to the naked eye, it was a nice surprise to see the colors pop out in the camera.
