Note that while it would probably have been a good idea at this juncture, I was not drinking a beer here – I was using an empty to drain brake fluid into!

Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore was our last major non-city stop on our recent trip around the Great Lakes region. We had visited a couple other dune/beachy areas on this trip and expected more of the same, but we were pleasantly surprised by the diversity of landscape here. The large dunes are definitely a highlight, but the forested campgrounds, cute downtown area, historic farms, and scenic drives make this park a real destination. And we got there in time to check out the annual salmon run along the Platte River, a fun sight to behold.

When we came down into the Lower Peninsula of Michigan, aka The Mitten, the rainy weather we had tried to avoid on Mackinac continued. We took the opportunity to pop into a sampling of the myriad wineries, breweries, and distilleries in the area around the Old Mission and Leelanau peninsulas. Lighthouses, rustic beaches, historic fishing villages, something called mushroom houses(???), delicious food and copious libations - what more could you want? Maybe a little sun, but we definitely made the best of it.

We had heard good things about it, but as we neare

We had heard good things about it, but as we neared Mackinac Island in Upper Michigan the weather wasn’t looking great. We did our best to time our visit to the island with a break in the rain, but we failed. Ten minutes after we rented some bikes to make our way around the outer loop road, the rain started coming down and it didn’t let up. We rode the 8 miles around the island getting thoroughly soaked, just in time for the sun to peak out as we re-entered the main downtown area. We got some food and dried out, bought some delicious fudge, and had a drink before heading back to the mainland, chilled, tired, and ready to call it a day’s misadventure.

Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore extends 42 miles

Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore extends 42 miles along the shores of Lake Superior in Upper Michigan. Designated in 1966, it was the country’s first National Lakeshore. We spent several days here and experienced it from both land and lake. The photos here are from a sunset cruise along the westernmost 13 or so miles of sandstone cliffs that give the park it’s name.

The Porcupine Mountains, aka The Porkies, are a group of small mountains along the shores of Lake Superior on the Michigan Upper Peninsula. We were a bit early to the show this year, but this is a good place for fall leaf peeping. It’s home to a large stand of old growth forest, and, like much of this area, sits on a boatload of copper that led to the US’s first big mineral rush in the mid 1800s. With hikes up to beautiful vistas, waterfalls big and small, and abandoned mining gear being reclaimed by the land, you can get a real sense of the rustic frontier life here.

With 66 remote water-accessible campsites over 14,000 acres of water, the Turtle-Flambeau Scenic Waters Area in northern Wisconsin is a bit like a mini version of the Boundary Waters. We hadn’t had enough of our kayak camping adventures yet, so as we crossed over from Minnesota toward the Michigan Upper Peninsula, we stopped off for a few nights in this area of Wisconsin and enjoyed an overnight paddle and a couple nights at a great nearby campground. The leaves had just started to show color as the seasons turned and we enjoyed a few perfect days out on the water.
